Silence: The Weight of Regret
The problem with being twins is that your achievements are never entirely your own; they are always mirrored and measured. My twin sister and I shared everything, including our birthday—the same cake, the same candles, and the same date on the calendar: the fourth of June. But in 2024, during our ninth-grade year, that sequence broke, leaving a scar on the date that can never be completely erased.
I have never been a good student; that title belonged to my sister. She scored predictably high marks on her academic exams, while I stumbled. The second terminal tests hit us like a sudden storm, but we handled them with a fair amount of confidence. However, when the results were released on the third of June—just a day before our birthday—my report card was totally disappointing. I had failed to live up to the expectations of my parents.
In a family, where academic success is considered a matter of pride, my failure carried a heavy weight of regret. Yet, the real punishment wasn’t my parents’ rebuke. The real punishment came when the calendar finally turned to the fourth of June, bringing a deep, breathtaking silence.
Usually, our birthday mornings are filled with excitement. But that year, the day passed in absolute stillness. There were no birthday wishes when we woke up. There was no “Happy Birthday” at all. The silence punished not only me but also my sister.
That was the most-cruel part of the experience we shared. She had done everything right. She had studied late into the night and scored the marks our parents demanded. Yet, because of my failure, her achievement was completely wiped away.
Watching her sit quietly on the edge of the bed, looking down at the calendar on our fifteenth birthday, a sharp realization hit me. My failure hadn’t just disappointed my parents; it had snatched away my sister’s rightful celebration. She was suffering from a storm she didn’t cause, paying the price for my mistake. The guilt shifted from a heavy weight on my chest to a burning need to fix what I had broken.
During that challenging period, I knew that the board examination would be my last opportunity. It’s not only to prove myself but also to restore peace and happiness to my family. At that moment, I made a promise to myself. And this time, I didn’t disappoint them. I can proudly say that this success was earned through my own hard work and dedication.
Moral: Falling down is an accident; staying down is a choice.

My True Self
I am Amrita Das, a student of class XI. I felt great getting good marks in my Madhyamik exams because it showed that my hard work had paid off. But these marks are just a few numbers written on a piece of paper. I am someone who loves to think deeply, imagine big things and enjoy every little moment of life. One day, at a cultural function organized by my school, I presented a recitation. At first, I was very nervous, but also excited to speak. I practiced many times at home so that I could recite clearly. When I stood on the stage, my hands were shaking. Instead of recalling my academic intelligence, I only thought to complete my recitation smoothly. So, I took a deep breath and started. My confidence restored when I saw the people were listening carefully. By the time I finished, I felt proud of myself. I got the first prize and that day I realized that who I really am beyond my school merit, marks and grades. I understand that being smart is not just about writing the right answers in the exam paper. Real intelligence is being a good listener, showing love to family and friends, understanding the world around me and staying strong even in difficult situations. My true identity is made up of my small dreams for the future, the values taught by my family and the good qualities that I try to share with others, which a report card can never show. My exam results are just a happy milestone on my journey, but my true self is built every day through my kind words, honest decisions, and positive goals for the future.
